Resources for Yummy Still Life Project

In this month's project, we'll learn about still life paintings, specifically by Wayne Thiebaud, pronounced tee-bow. You can read about him here. He painted a lot of different things but is most famous for his paintings of cakes, pies, and other food items. He used thick oil paints but we are going to use watercolors. He is a contemporary artist, meaning alive today rather than a long time ago. He is not still alive, but just passed away on December 25, 2021, at the age of 101! Here is a more in-depth biography about him.

 We'll also learn how to make drawings look 3 dimensional.

Setting the Stage

2-dimensional object:  has a length and a height and looks flat. Like a circle or a square.

3-dimensional object:has length, height, and width like a sphere or a ball and a cube.

Still Life: A work of art showing common objects like food, flowers, dishes, glassware, books, etc. Paul Cezanne is just one of the masters who was known for his still lifes among other subject matter. When people hear the term still life,, they often think of painting of fruit or flowers, but still lifes (yes, the plural is lifes, not lives even though it look weird!) can also be toys, shoes, a bowl of cereal, cookies...

Ombre: where colors or tones fade into each other.

Wayne Thiebaud, 1920 – 2021 (pronounced tee-bow): was an American painter known for his colorful still life paintings of common objects & sweets like pies, lipsticks, paint cans, ice cream cones, pastries, and hot dogs.

Watercolor paper or other sturdy paper

Watercolor pencils, water soluble markers (typically any markers that say they're washable), or watercolor paints

•A regular pencil for sketching

•A cup, recycled yogurt (or cottage cheese, salsa etc) container, to use for water

A paint brush or brushes
