Our artist this month, middle school art educator Aleisea Guzman, has worked hard to bring you the March project: creating stunning nighttime skyscapes and some colorful ways to design paintings of your favorite time of day.

Setting the Stage

Railway tunnel and trees featuring depth. C/o @sergeycauselove on Freepik.

This month's project will focus on depth. What is depth? Depth is a principle of art that focuses on creating the illusion of three-dimensional (3D) space on a two-dimensional (2D) surface, such as a piece of paper or canvas. Depth is what shows you whether something in an image is near to you or farther away. Artists can use many different techniques to create depth and we're going to focus on two with our watercolor night sky project: creating depth with size and creating depth with saturation (how dark or light colors are).

Imagine your favorite time of day. What are the colors you see? Try to use those colors from your paint palette to create a different kind of skyscape!

Aleisea Guzman

Visual artist and art educator in New Bedford, MA. Graduated from University of Massachusetts, Dartmouth in May of 2019 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Animation & Game Arts with a concentration in sculpture, now working towards a Masters degree in Art education. Always looking to enhance my comprehension and execution of both art and art education, I place high importance on arts in the community and feel a welcomed sense of duty to the youth, not only to educate them traditionally but immerse them in the exploration of their own creativity. My own practice is primarily comprised of mixed media sculpture, assemblage, paintings, and digital media. I often focus on themes such as neurodiversity, nature, deep & abstract emotions, social justice issues, and the unknown.
