Setting the Stage

This month's project Sgraffito is a technique in visual arts used in pottery, painting, and glass. Merriam-Webster defines sgraffito as “decoration by cutting away parts of a surface layer to expose a different colored ground”. The word, Sgraffito, comes from the Italian word “graffiare” which means to scratch. The illustrations in our book this month look like the artist used a scratching or Sgraffito technique. It’s the perfect technique to use on clouds and rain!will focus on depth. What is depth? Depth is a principle of art that focuses on creating the illusion of three-dimensional (3D) space on a two-dimensional (2D) surface, such as a piece of paper or canvas. Depth is what shows you whether something in an image is near to you or farther away. Artists can use many different techniques to create depth and we're going to focus on two with our watercolor night sky project: creating depth with size and creating depth with saturation (how dark or light colors are).
