Setting the Stage

Vincent Van Gogh is famous for the amazing swirly textures in his paintings because he used lots of thick paint on his canvases! Impasto is a technique in painting where artists use very thick layers of paint so that the paint actually sticks out from the surface of the canvas or board. If we went to a museum, we would not be allowed to touch Van Gogh’s paintings, but if we could, we’d feel the rich texture of the paint! The impasto technique gave Van Gogh’s paintings emotion & energy.

•Recommended Book (optional) - Getting to Know the World’s Greatest Artists, VanGogh by Mike Venezia, this is also available at most libraries and we have included a link to a YouTube read aloud we found up above

•Drawing Paper for your Thumbnail Drawings - printer paper will also work!

•Acrylic Paint Set, other thick paints can work, like thick tempera paint or water soluble oils

•Mini Canvases, Mini Canvas Boards, or Heavy Watercolor Paper

•Some Brushes

•Makeup Sponges (optional but fun!) They are inexpensive, available on Amazon and at drugstores
