Setting the Stage

In watercolor, leaving areas of your paper white is really important! That’s especially important when you’re painting snow! What you don’t paint is just as important as what you do paint. Look at this illustration and see all the areas of white this artist left on his paper!

Supplies Needed for Insider's Club Members (or if you're a box subscriber & want to purchase additional supplies)

•Recommended book - optional: If Picasso Painted a Snowman by Amy & Greg Newbold You can purchase it, find it at your local library, or watch a read aloud on YouTube here.

What you'll need:

• watercolor paints - the regular paint type with dry cakes of watercolor paint, liquid watercolors, or if you were a box subscriber a couple of years ago , you can use the Peerless Watercolors on card stock

course sea salt - this needs to be coarser than regular table salt but not as coarse as some of the salt you would put in a grinder.

• paint brushes: most watercolor pan sets come with a brush. If that's decent, you could probably get by with that. If you want a little more of an assortment, try these.

watercolor paper

•water cup - this can be an old yogurt container, a cup or mug, really anything that holds a little water and you don't mind getting paint on

•pencil with an eraser or separate eraser

•it's helpful to have some rags or paper towels nearby and to cover your work surface with an old tablecloth, old shower curtain, butcher paper, or something else.

*Some of the product links above are Amazon affiliate links. We receive a very very small commission if you purchase through them (which we hope you will if you purchase supplies!) They do NOT affect your price at all!
